Mechanical Design of Electric Powertrain

As powertrain lead for the Model Year 2019 vehicle, I redesigned the motor and differential mounting and transmission system to be lighter and easier to access.

  • Reduced system mass by 5 kg (>20%) using structural hand calculations in Excel and FEA in Solidworks Simulation

  • Manufactured components out of 7075 aluminum on CNC mill and lathe, including precision bearing surfaces

  • Improved serviceability by allowing the motor and differential to be installed and removed independently

  • Verified sprocket strength with empirical hardness test

  • Designed and manufactured welding jig to minimize chain misalignment
